The Athens
City Board of Education is responsible for elementary education
within the government’s jurisdiction. The Board consists of
six publicly elected officials who appoint the Superintendent.
The Board however is fiscally dependent upon the City because
the City Council approves the annual budget, levies taxes (if
necessary), and must approve any debt issues. Director of Schools,
Robert W. Greene, and the entire staff of the Athens city school
system work daily to provide the children of Athens with award
winning educational opportunities.
