Athens, TN All-American Soap Box Derby

Thursday July 21, 2011

Akron, Ohio

On Wednesday night after we had already completed Wednesday's page the champs went back to the track for an official photo and then went to trade night where they traded items with other champs. Remind me to let Morgan negotiate my next car purchase as she proved to be a real horse trader. Jacob traded well too as both champs returned with a lot of items. Thanks again to M&M Mars, Athens Federal and Athens Regional Medical Center for providing trade items.

Here are the stock champions from around the world.

And the Super Stock Champions. Do you see the next world champion?

The champs had their first day off since they got to Akron and due to excessive heat warnings had to find things to do inside as heat indexes are in triple digits. Of course we are participating in a sport that is run on asphalt so we decided to have some fun and see if we could fry an egg on the sidewalk or parking lot. Here Jacob breaks an egg on the edge of the concrete planter. We used aluminum foil for easy clean-up.

Ok we could not resist putting one right on the asphalt. Here Isaac Fesmire cracks and places the egg. So much for sunny side up Isaac.

In true Mythbuster fashion Morgan places one on the asphalt on aluminum foil as well.

We also could not resist placing one on the transformer.

When we came out later to check the eggs someone had placed a hard boiled egg next to ours. It may be a Kiwi egg since the New Zealand crew is staying here too.

And the winner is ASPHALT. While we could not get one to fry we certainly would call this cooked and scrambled. We are not sure how it got so spread out. Maybe the hard boiled prankster stepped in it.

Our hotel staff threw a party for all the champs staying here. Free pizza, snacks and drinks for all champs and families. This cake was huge.

Here we are enjoying the party with other racers.

Here are all of the champs at our hotel. As part of the party the hotel gave away two kids bikes. Unfortunately we did not win the raffle.

Here are our champs with Pamela Ritley the General Manager of the Holiday Inn Express where we are staying. She has been super accommodating to all of the racers and we thank her. Jacob seems to be enjoying this photo shoot.

Here is a derby incident you may find funny. After Morgan's practice she was put in the back of a pickup truck along with 4 other drivers to be taken back to the top with their cars. As they were sitting there waiting to go to the top everyone just stopped and looked at her when Morgan said something. The rest of the ride she was the only one that was allowed to talk because the other racers wanted to hear her accent. They even gave her a list of words to say so they could hear the southern version. Funny she sounds normal to me.

On Friday Hamilton Hacker takes to the hill in the Super Kids Division. He will race after 10 am. Listen to WYXI for Hamilton's results as they happen!
