Open burning is allowed inside the city limits with permission
from the Fire Department. We follow the Tennessee Division of
Forestry guidelines for allowing or banning burning. Wood and
brush are allowed with prior permission. No leaves, building
material, or trash should be burned. All controlled burns should
have someone with them at all times. The Athens Fire Department
will inspect the material to be burned if needed. Before burning
proper safety measures should be taken. Do not burn under power
lines or near buildings. Keep a water hose near. All fires should
be extinguished at dark. Residents may call the Athens Fire
Department at (423) 744-2762 to obtain a free permit. These
permits are issued at the burn site just prior to items being
lit. All persons wishing to burn after presenting their burn
location to fire department personell will be issued a number
for future references if their location meets all requirements.
