Responsibilities

The Codes Enforcement Division is responsible for safeguarding the health, safety and welfare of Athens residents, business and property owners in the area of housing and building code enforcement of the minimum property, building and nuisance codes for existing buildings are also enforced by the department. These standards are applicable for all property within the city limits and regulate the general maintenance of property to address aspects of mowing, garbage removal, junk, and inoperable vehicles. In the enforcement of these regulations a citation may be issued by the inspector for any violation and / or the City Manager may instruct the Public Works Department to clean/remove/mow and assess the cost of such action to the property owner.

    FAQ:

    • How high can my grass get before it is in violation?
      12 inches

    • What is an abandoned / inoperative vehicle?
      A vehicle that is not road worthy. Road worthy means the vehicle is legal to travel on any road and is not in violation by the Tennessee Motor Vehicle standards. Also, any vehicle that has not been or cannot be moved for a period in excess of 72 hours.

    • Can I operate a business from my home?
      Yes. Provided you have approval from the Athens Regional Planning Commission and meet all of the requirements as stated by the Municipal Zoning Ordinance.

    • Can I put yard sale signs on the utility poles or along the roads?
      No. Signs of any nature are not allowed on utility poles or along any right-of-way.

    • If I have been notified of a violation, can I request more time to comply?
      In most cases, yes. However, there are a few exceptions.
